Win Win – A Film Review

When an underemployed lawyer accepts a guardianship of an elderly man with dementia for the money, he doesn’t expect he’ll end up raising the man’s grandson as well.  That is the basic premise of “Win Win” starring Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan who play a couple who consist of a very moral wife and a not so moral husband and their relationship with a grandfather and teenage grandson. The grandson turns out to be a top-ranked wrestler who is a benefit to the bottom-ranked wrestling team coached by the lawyer.

I’d love to teach a legal ethics course utilizing different films. This film would definitely be one to discuss just what lengths an attorney should go when money is short.  There’s plenty of legal ethics here for discussion, including the protagonist lying to the judge. Yet this guy is likable. I can only attribute that to an amazing performance by Paul Giamatti.

Viewing this film is a great way to spend the evening.
