Engaged to Die – A Book Review

Engaged to Die is part of the Death on Demand series by Caroline Hart. The stories revolve around a mystery bookstore, Death on Demand, on an island just off the coast of South Carolina. This is second one I’ve read in the series. This series does not have to be read in order which is a real plus for those of us who shop in used bookstores.

In this installment, a rich widow cougar becomes engaged to a penniless artist who has just ended a romantic relationship with a young woman destined to become a blackmailer and started another romantic relationship with the clerk in the Death on Demand bookstore. When the artist is murdered and the store’s clerk, Chloe is accused, the store’s owner Annie Darling and her PI spouse Max enter the case. The plot is well-worn (the rich widow cougar is stepmother to a bunch of free-loading, lazy stepchildren). Even so, there’s plenty of twists and turns to hold interest – not to mention an island full of quirky personalities. Good beach read.
